About me and my work
I have developed my kiln fired ceramic relief pictures over the past 30 years. In that time I have moved around England and exhibited internationally but always came back to my native Cornwall. I love 2 dimensional painting and drawing but always seem to be inspired by working with clay and the 3d relief image.. My clay work, sculptural and relief, is usually studying form, detail, pattern and tone. Clay to me is a medium I use to illustrate my ideas and whatever moves me. The ideas are informed by a cocktail of my horticultural experience on Scilly and my Graphic and fine art work. I had parents who were market gardeners, growing Anemones and Polyanthus to sell in Truro markets. Mum was a florist and Dad had been a potter. I had a Cornish childhood surrounded by stimulating paintings, pottery and textiles. Cornwall is a continuous well spring of inspiration. As i get older. It takes many years for ideas and emotions to ferment and develop and finally take form as a finished piece. In my head I never stop absorbing colours, sketching ideas and working out how to define a subject in clay or paint.
The ceramic relief pictures
These I have exhibited in New York, London, and Italy as well as locally. I show and sell most of my current work from Art Space gallery in St Ives. I also exhibit through the Cornwall Craft Association and Gallery Tresco on The Isles of Scilly. Much of my clay work is and can be privately commissioned.
The cupboards are designed by myself and made by a carpenter in Hayle. He also makes most of my frames. For the relief areas I usually use Stoneware clay. I hand make, craft and carve the piece and then fire it to about 1000 degrees. When its cooled I paint and re-assemble the picture or cabinet decoration, working the foreground with the back ground so the image and background work together. They are well suited in kitchens, bathrooms and are colour fast. If you need to dust it use a hair dryer or a small paint brush. If a piece is very detailed I sometimes put them behind glass in a box frame. This can be done after the piece is completely finished and depending on where its hung. I can deliver around the UK but allowances have to be made for crate and courier fee.
I like the immediacy of paint, it’s the light on the land or sea and sultry colours that inspires me to use this medium. I like to work fast when painting. It often feels like sketching because in a few minutes later the light or tide has changed and it looks like a completely different view. I like the speed. I use all kinds of mediums, oil, acrylic, pastel, whatever is needed. I paint on canvas board. The paintings are of the places I love to visit. Trencrom Hill, Hayle Estuary, Gwithian Towans and of course St Ives.
Often in the dark internal months of the winter I do a study of a particular flower or tree, building it into a pattern as The St Agnes Anemonies, or The Christmas Tree. I have so many more ideas than I will ever have time to paint which is frustrating! But I have to accept doing what I can when I can one day at time.
Giclee Prints are also available to view and buy at the gallery or online. Giclee are the best quality colour fast prints that are available. Also contact me for any private commissions.
